This recipe for Crunchy Orange Cookies is a great starter recipe for kids. It is such a simple and tasty recipe that kids love going back to make it again and again!

Doubling the quantities of this recipe will ensure that there’s enough to go around for everyone because you’ll be surprised how quickly they will disappear!!

You could substitute the orange juice for lemon juice if you prefer a more tangy flavor!

TO MAKE THE ICING:
Sieve the icing sugar into a bowl and add the orange juice.
Stir together until runny icing is formed, adding a little more orange juice if necessary.
Either use an icing bag to pipe the icing onto the cooled cookies, or use a fork to drizzle the icing over and back on each cookie until they look delicious!!

  • Butter, diced into cubes [2 oz / 60 g]
  • Soft brown sugar [2 oz / 60 g]
  • Egg, beaten [1]
  • Honey [1 tablespoon]
  • Orange [zest]
  • Icing sugar (confectioner's sugar) [8 oz / 250 g]
  • Freshly squeezed orange juice [3 tablespoons]

Preparation & Cooking

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F / 180 C.

  2. In a large bowl, sieve in the flour and add the butter. Use the tips of your fingers to rub the butter into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs.

  3. Add the sugar, honey, orange zest and a little of the beaten egg to the flour mixture, stir to combine. If the mixture appears too crumbly, add a little bit more of the egg until the mix starts to come together.

  4. Using your hands, form the dough into a ball.

  5. Sprinkle a little bit of flour onto the work surface and lightly knead the dough.

  6. Form it into sausage shape (about the same diameter as a cookie) and wrap it in cling film / plastic wrap. Allow to chill in the refrigerator for approx 2 hours until firm.

  7. Prepare your baking sheet / cookie sheet by either greasing it lightly with butter or lining it with parchment / baking paper.

  8. Slice the Crunchy Orange Cookie dough into thin slices and place on the baking / cookie sheet, allowing space between each so that they don't stick together when rising.

  9. Bake for 8 - 10 minutes, until golden but not darkened.

  10. Remove from oven, allow them to cool slightly before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
