Scary ghost meringues, perfect halloween food for kids to make

Little meringue ghosts are a firm favorite bite size snack for kids at Halloween parties.  They don’t take much skill to make and kids can have great fun marking the eyes and mouths of the ghosts with edible markers after they are baked.

  • Can be made a week or two before the party
  • Young children can help to decorate the faces of the ghosts
  • Can be used as a topper on cupcakes
  • Can be used on top of a bowl of jelly blood (red jello) to make a scary dessert

  • Egg whites [4]
  • Cream of tartar [1/2 teaspoon]
  • Caster sugar (fine sugar) [1 cup]

Preparation & Cooking

  1. Preheat oven to 140C degrees / 280 F.

  2. Using an electric mixer, whip the egg whites for a few minutes on high speed until they become frothy (you will see lots of little bubbles).

  3. Next, add your sugar in small amounts.

  4. Finally, mix in the cream of tartar.

  5. Continue to whip the mixture until it gets stiff (meaning that it holds a shape when stopped).

  6. Prepare your baking sheet with a layer of foil covered with non-stick spray / light smear of butter

  7. Place the meringue mixture into an icing bag.

  8. Using your icing bag and a large round icing tip, pipe the base of the ghosts, in decreasing circles from bottom to top to form the shape of a ghost.

  9. Bake them for about 45 minutes or until the tops become a very light golden color.

  10. Once they are completely cooled, use a black or red food marker to make little eyes and mouths on the ghosts!
